Amazon Learning is a social enterprise that creates meaningful educational experiences for people interested in gaining understanding of the link between local people and the Amazonian ecosystem. We foster learning through a variety of programs from short one-week courses led by experts in their field to four-month immersion programs where participants live and work in local communities. Our participants forge meaningful connections to the people and forest of the Amazon, and their experience does not end there: alumni leave with new worldly perspectives and a profound commitments to share these with world.
Our participants are encouraged to think critically throughout their experience. Participants will read scholarly articles and engage in group discussions. Amazon Learning provides resources with which our participants can gain a greater sense of themselves, their role in the world, and the sense of agency with which they can go on to create positive social changes that are relevant and beneficial to their future pursuits.
Beyond learning, our participants contribute to meaningful social action through the projects they implement. Participants will work with a variety of local organizations that ensure the longevity of projects. They will also develop strong connections to local communities and friendships that will last a lifetime.
Participants are required to reflect daily in personal journals. Personal reflection is the key for growth and learning. Each participant will have weekly one-on-one meetings with their supervisor. They are also encouraged to share their reflections with the group through peer-to-peer reflection sessions.
We believe in building a future based on healthy group dynamics. Each participant group is a microcosm of our greater world. By focusing on the values of empathy, curiosity, humility, and responsibility, we hope to instill a sense of group mentality that participants will carry into their future work.
